Arts Literacy Teaching Artist

Status: Freelance

Stipend: $3500

Hours: 7/8/13-8/9/13, M-F mornings; meetings/trainings as scheduled;
final performance

Report to: Executive Director

Primary Function: work with literacy teacher to deliver Arts Literacy curriculum which includes building community, entering text, comprehending text, creating text, revising text and performing text

Essential Duties Responsibilities:
Include the following:

• Attend PD sessions to prepare to teach curriculum
• Co-teach two 90 minute classes daily
• Meet with literacy teacher regularly for planning
• Participate in school culture at sites assigned
• Prepare students for final performance
• Collect documentation as requested

Qualifications:
The successful candidate should possess the following skills or qualities:
Prior experience teaching drama to children
Ability to work collaboratively
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
A strong background in acting/performance
Interest in directing process-based projects

About Hartford Performs Arts Literacy Program:
Students become members of an arts-centered literacy learning community. Using Sophocles’ Antigone as an primary text, students explore the play’s key themes including “loyalty and betrayal,” “sibling rivalry,” and “power and control.” The program’s curriculum is modeled on the Performance Cycle developed by Brown University’s Arts Literacy Project and will culminate in a public performance of student-created work inspired by the themes of Antigone.
