Social Justice Project

In an effort to begin educational dialogues around topics of race, equity, and neighborhood reform, we have partnered with Hartford Public Schools to focus on social justice in our community. Due to the content and language used in these resources, user discretion is advised. 

RapOetry 20-minute Remix

for High Schools (9-12th grade)!

Grades: 9-12, click here for grades 6-8 RapOetry Workshops

Description: Watch the RapOet perform a few motivational lines of rap poetry. Next, watch the RapOet transform a 7th Grade version of “Real Good” to a more complex version for High School Students, including Analogy & Allusion to other texts, while noticing the Figurative Language and Connotations. Third, follow a step-by-step guided writing process as follows: (1) Guided Breathing (2) Listing relevant moments from movies, books, and pop culture (3) Writing lines of poetry corresponding to 4 moments (4) revising for fluency. 

Duration: 25 minutes

Optional Extra credit: Those teachers who want student works to be recognized by the RapOet, may opt to email him the Text of Lyrics, or send links to Recordings of their Original Verses. He will then respond via email or youtube with a congratulations message including one or more of the following based on the Teacher’s request: 1. "Congratulations to the students of [Teacher Name]'s class", 2. Mentioning quotes from some of the students’ work, 3. Reposting Lyrics or Reciting some of the work

Studio 860 MVMNT

Grades: 9-12

Description: Students will join Jolet and Team 860 dancers on a journey through the mind as they interpret current events through spoken word, krump dance, breaking, and modern dance movement.
