Arts Literacy Teaching Artists Wanted
April 9, 2014

Hartford Performs announced today that it has received a $40,000 grant from the Travelers Foundation to support its Summer Arts Literacy Program. The grant was awarded by the Travelers Foundation, the charitable arm of The Travelers Companies, Inc.

Hartford Performs’ Summer Arts Literacy Program is an integrated part of the Hartford Public School district’s five-week summer school program, and serves middle school students in all of the district’s 18 neighborhood schools.

Using a curriculum modeled after the Performance Cycle, developed by Brown University in partnership with Gamm Theatre, a certified classroom teacher and teaching artist teach side by side during the English Language Arts block of summer school to bring text alive in the classroom. Through self-assessments, teamwork, and developing acting skills, students gain comfort in reading and are able to build a strong sense of community, while demonstrating an understanding of a classical text. The program ends with student performances that are inspired by the text.

Hartford Performs Summer Arts Literacy Program aligns well with Travelers’ focus to use the arts to support student achievement,” said Erin Haberman, Program Officer for the Travelers Foundation and Director of Community Relations for Travelers. “The program enriches student learning and provides Hartford students with high-quality arts experiences.”

“We are so thankful to the Travelers Foundation for their continued support of our Summer Arts Literacy Program,” said Robert Warren, Executive Director of Hartford Performs. “Travelers has shown their commitment to Hartford Performs for the past three years with their financial support. With the funding, combined with a deep commitment from the students, teachers and artists, we can move forward with another engaging summer of community building and learning.”
